Leather Source
Thursday 14 February 2013

Leather  is a well known material used for a range of fashion items.
It is attractive to people due to its beauty and elegance.
There are many ways to make attractive leathers,
yet people don't know where the leather had come from.
Today, we will discuss about the sources of leather.

- CALF SKIN is made from the hide of young cattle.
It has a beautiful soft, smooth texture and is found in the finest handbags.

- KIP (Steer hide)  is from a slightly older animal.
It is not as fragile as Calf skin, but also not as supple and fine.

- GOATSKIN and PIGSKIN are both very soft and supple.
They are also quite durable.
Goatskin is softer than cowhide, but tougher than sheep skin.
It has unique texture in its finish.
Pigskin is one of the most popular leathers to make use of suede.
It has a follicle pattern where the hair has been removed.

- COWHIDE is from a full-grown animal and produces a grained leather,
quite commonly used in casual handbags.

- SHEEP AND LAMBSKIN create a lighter,
fine-grained leather often used in imported handbags.

- REPTILE SKINS are used in handbags which come from diverse kinds of reptiles
such as snakes, turtles and lizards.
They are distinguished from other types of leathers
in that the elaborate patterns and textures are created by the scales.
Reptile skins are a challenge to clean
because the pearly or scaled finish is easily damaged
while cleaning and requires the technique of an expert.

'
-CROCODILE SKIN is highly exotic, fashionable and expensive.
It's very strong and durable, yet supple.
Nowadays, most crocodile leather comes from the crocodiles raised in farms
to prevent them from becoming an endangered species.

- OSTRICH SKIN is known for its distinct quill follicle patterns.
It is naturally water-resistant, durable and supple.

- EEL SKIN: Eel skin is not only softer than other animal hides and leathers,
but is considered to be as elegant as Ostrich and Crocodile skin.
Eel skin is 150% stronger and more flexible than any other leather.
Eel-skin purses will hold up well in cleaning if it is not in bad shapes.
Like reptile skins, extreme care must be taken to prevent damage and maintain the overall colour and texture.

How to distinguish REAL leather form FAKE leather!!!
Wednesday 06 February 2013

Many people intend to buy a leather product. However, you may have a question in your mind; is it real leather or fake leather, and how can I distinguish?

myLeather.com.au offers some instruction to distinguish real leather from fake leather.

1.     Check the LABEL

The easiest and most obvious way is to look for a label indicating that the product is actually made from genuine leather. Don’t go for the one labeled «Man made product» since these will be fake.

2.     Look carefully

Look at your own skin. You will find that there are pours, textures and gloss. So it is the same for leather. Examine for pores of the surface of the leather. Pores on the fake will be in a consistent, regular repeating pattern, yet pores on the real leather will be irregular.

  Synthetic leather texture

             Genuine Leather texture

3.     Touch

It is hard to follow this step. A common rule is that real leather feels delicate and smooth. When you touch fake leather, it feels like plastic and is smoother than genuine leather.

4.     Smell it.

Genuine leather has a strong scent while fake leather does not have a smell. However, the important thing to know is that there are many synthetic leather items on the market that are sprayed with some kind of aromatic product, which simulate the smell of leather. So do not be fooled by smell.

5.     Burn it.

We don’t recommend this method, however it is most effective way to tell the product is genuine leather or not. Real leather burns into a certain shade and texture, and it emits an odour like scorched hair. However, synthetic leather burns like plastic.

6.     Check the edge.

The edge of fake leather, where it’s been cut, is different from real leather. Real leather is supposed to be ragged to the touch. However fake leather will look and feel like foam or plastic.

The way to deal with stain on your precious designer leather purse
Wednesday 16 January 2013

The way to deal with stain on your precious designer leather purses

You may be happy with the purchase of your leather handbags. These leathers are tanned in the traditional way in various colours and textures. As time goes by, you will notice there is patina which enhances leather bags’ natural look, but leather bags will darken due to oil from human skin and direct sun light.  So basically you need to keep your leather bags from exposure to intense sun light, heat and humidity.
There are a range of reasons why leather bags are stained. We will discuss staining and how to clean your leather purse.

1.      Something you must know before cleaning leather bag.
Everyone already knows that all genuine leathers are once a living hide of animal. Like all animals, leather needs to breathe. Therefore, if you suffocate leather bags with wrong cleaner, or allow stains to be embedded, the leather will be cracked, dry, or fade.

-        Use a microfiber clothe when you clean leather bags, rather than using soggy paper towels.
-        The most important thing is that cleaning designer leather bags is risky!!!!!! So, without strong attention, you will ruin your salvageable bags and make it as a piece of rubbish.
2.      Deal with minor stains

-        Before the stain is heavily soiled into leather, it is quite easy to clean. So, you need to keep freshen up your leather purse to maintain its best condition.

-        When you clean your leather purse, you can use baby wash and microfiber towels.
The baby wash needs to be heavily diluted in water (1 - 2drops into 240 – 360 ml of water), and stir the mixture well. Put the mixture into a spray bottle.
             -        DO NOT SPRAY ON LEATHER DIRECTLY. Spray the mix on to the towel and gently wipe the stains. You need to pay more attention to the area most touchable like the handle and clasp.

3.      Deal with major stains.

-        Wet stain: Wet stain is when the stain comes from water. This stain can be removed at home

-        Dry stain: Dry stain is a blemish by exposing oil, paint, wax, or lipstick. This kind of stain requires professional attention.

4.      Saddle Soap

-        You may have strong affection to use saddle soap to remove the blemishes on the leather purse. However, saddle soap can create streaks or stains on certain leathers. So without testing them at inconspicuous area, it will end up with strong contaminants; such as making strains deeper, making them worse, or removing leather dye from the surface.

-        So, when you use saddle soap, test it. If it is effective on your leather bag, then gently continue the process.

It is good to clean as early as possible when you detect a new stain. However, you can not rush the process when you clean leather. Also, do not be afraid to repeat the process. This process needs several attempts to get used to it.
